research into Goodwin's theory - Miss Georgiou

Goodwin's theory

The Man Who Can't be Moved - The Script

Andre Goodwin's theory consists of 7 elements:

  1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
  2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
  3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.
  4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and artists may develop motifs which recur.
  5. There is frequent reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  6. There is often intertextual reference to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc.
  7. Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based, and how elements of each is used in it
My chosen music video demonstrates stereotypical characteristics of the pop genre which corresponds to the first element of Goodwin's theory. Specific evidence as the video often switches from the narrative to performance. As the chorus is played the video switches to a mid shot of the band singing and close ups of the band members and main artist. Performance is generally seen as a key element of the pop genre as artists often aim to show themselves as regularly as possible in order to appeal to their fans. Due to the genre having a conventional audience of teenagers and mostly girls, the performance element of a video is very important. The audience usually obsess over artist and through showing the artist regularly singing and performing, they are able to build a relationship with the fans.

The video also comply's to the second element of Goodwin's theory as the lyrics are evidently seen to match the video itself. The key part of the lyrics, also seen as the title itself is 'the man who can't be moved'. The song relates to a 'man who can't be moved' as he is seen 'waiting on a girl'. The video clearly portrays this through the use of narrative. Throughout the verses of the song and portions of the chorus, the main artist is seen waiting on a corner in the middle of a city for a very long period of time. It evidently follows Goodwin's theory through relating to the songs lyrics as it shows him as 'the man who can't be moved' as he waits for the girl he is in love with. Through doing this the video allows an audience to understand the plot and idea behind the song. This particular plot specifically appeals to teenagers and teenage girls as they are generally seen to enjoy fantasising about romance and relationships. Romance is a key convention of the pop genre as the songs often show light hearted plots with themes of 'love' in order to appeal to a younger audience.

Within the music video there is also clear evidence of a relationship between the music itself and the visuals. This is specifically evident towards the end of the video. As the song picks up pace and hits the main chorus the video consists of fast paced editing and a montage of shots showing the artist waiting for a girl. This is done so that the music matches the video, therefore showing it to agree with Goodwin's theory. The use of fast paced editing shows his desperate need for the love of the girl focused upon in the video. This is again conventional to the pop genre as it builds upon the theme of romance and love. It also makes the video easier to follow and watch.

Furthermore there is evidence of the video following the requirements of the record label through including various close ups of the main singer and artist. This is mostly shown through the performance element of the video. The video regularly shows him as singing to the camera with a close up whilst walking along the high street. This demonstrates the artist representation within the video, again following Goodwin's theory. This has great effect on the target audience. Due to the artist being a male singer, teenage girls are generally seen fantasising about him. The close ups within the video almost portrays the singer as though he is talking to the viewer, this again helps him build a relationship between him and his audience. This is vary relevant to the key target audience of teenage girls who are particularly seen to fantasise over the male artist.

Additionally, the video does follow elements five and six as it shows evidence of forms of 'looking' through intertextual features.  This is clearly shown as the artist is seen on a news channel waiting on the corner. It portrays him as being stationary whilst singing on the corner for a lengthy period of time and the news channel emphasises the popular support he has in his quest to find the girl he loves and large amount of effort he would go through to find her. This is furthermore evidence of the theory seen within the video. It has effects on the audience as they are engaged through wanting to see why he is on the news channel; this also elaborates upon his presentation of a pop star that would appeal to the mainstream audience. It also emphasises the conventional romantic plot of which appeals to the target audience of teenage girls as it shows the lengths he would go to in order to find the girls he loves.

Finally, as seen in the other elements of the theory, the video itself shows a variety of the three styles for music videos incorporated into the clip. Performance is seen at the chorus through shows of the band playing in an empty urban car park. Narrative is clearly shown as the video follows the lyrics, presenting the artist as trying to find the girl he loves through waiting by the place they met. Also, a concept is seen through the presentation of love and relationships. The video itself is primarily concept and narrative based with this idea of a man searching for the girl he loves. This is again done to appeal to the target audience of teenagers, prominently teenage girls, as the are seen to enjoy the evident conventional  romantic themes within the selected narrative consisting of the artists quest for the love of a a girl.

To conclude, this research has assisted me in understanding the concept of the Goodwin theory and how to create a good music video that follows the elements of the theory. This has resulted in me specifically gaining a clear idea of how to effectively incorporate a mic of music video styles in order to appeal to a certain target audience. For example, The Script using primarily concept and narrative in order to create a romantic theme to the video which appeals to their primary target audience of teenage girls. I have now decided that my music video potentially should contain a variety of the different music video styles, dominated y one, in order to appeal to a specific target audience.

Evaluation - Q4

Evaluation - Q2

Evaluation - Q3

My group and I chose to use youtube as a platform for gaining feedback. This was chosen for a number of reasons. Firstly, it allowed us to access a comment bar; this meant that we could use more detailed feedback from the audience. Another reason was the use of tags on youtube; this allowed us to gain further access to dance fans as we could tag the video within the selected genre. Finally, youtube is also often linked with social media; this meant that we could gain access to a mainstream audience. Dance music is often followed by a mainstream audience and it allowed us to gain a wider range of opinions.

My first comment on the uploaded video stated that ‘The visuals matched the music well’. I was very happy with this comment as it showed that the video complied with Goodwin’s theory. It also showed that the viewers enjoyed the pace of the video as it matched the fast paced music. This was high conventional to the dance genre as it often fast paced as the artist aimed to convey excitement. We further addressed this comment through fast paced montages added to the new footage.

Another positive comment was seen as one person stated that the use of ‘club setting’ were more ‘extravagant’. This was very pleasing as it shows that the conventional use of club settings were a success. They evidently portrayed a sense of excitement and vibrancy that most dance artists aim to convey. We further addressed this use of club setting through the jump cuts from date scenes to club scenes within the added footage.

One negative comment stated that the ‘editing’ was ‘dull in places’. This was referring to the office scenes within the video, they were made to be plain in order to emphasise the artists professionalism and dedication. After reviewing the feedback, we decided upon making the scenes far more choppy and colourful through added tints and flashes. These were created through added filters that were available on final cut pro X. The colour balance within the tints were altered in order to create different bright colours. This was effective as it added to the conventionality of the artists party lifestyle presentation whilst also further appealing to the target audience as the colours build excitement and ‘feel-good’ emotions.

Additionally another negative comment stated that the ‘fabricated bar setting looked unrealistic. This was referring to the bar scenes within the video and the black curtain in the background with a lack of colourful lighting. After reviewing the feedback we decided upon adding vast amounts of filters in order to create a more realistic setting. This involved adding a ‘vignette’ filter and flashes alongside ‘super 8mm’ filter; together they made the video darker so that the curtain in the background disappeared whilst also bringing added colour to the neon lighting we had and added strobe lighting through flashing lights. Overall, it made the bar setting far more realistic, further signifying that the artist lives a conventional, vibrant party lifestyle. The use of a bar setting would appeal to the target audience as the younger adults are often seen to be the main age group to attend these venues.

Within the music industry, feedback is generally used in order to keep up to date with various trends within the target audience and their subcultures. These trends are then often incorporated into the media products themselves. This allowed an artist to vastly increase popularity and sales as they achieve stardom through a ‘ordinary’ presentation.

Evaluation - Q1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The overall brief given to me and my group in relation to our media products was to create a music video for a chosen genre, artist and song. Together we come the dance genre with the artist Shift K3Y and his song 'I Know'. The artist himself is a highly conventional dance artist; however, the song had a narrative within the lyrics. This allowed us to build upon a narrative style within the video. We also had to create ancillary products alongside this. They consisted of a magazine advert and a digipak. The ancillaries were used to market a fabricated album that coincided with the artist and the music video.

The basic purpose of a music video is to advertise a artist or a brand associated with the artist, to present the artist in a way that would appeal to their fanbase and to develop a plot or narrative to run alongside the song itself. A perfect example example of these purposes was shown through David Guetta and his song 'Without You' featuring Usher. This is a conventional dance video that I used as inspiration for my own work.

One example of advertisements seen within the video is shown through the constant reference to 'Beats' headphones that are seen to be used by David throughout. David Guetta is closely related to this branded it helps him to create further links within the media spectrum. Headphones are highly conventional to the dance genre with them often being used by DJs in clubs. This advertisement also links towards the target audience of 15-25 year olds as young adults and teenagers often buy the stylish headphones.

Artist presentation is conveyed within the video through constant low angles and close ups of the artist, showing him to be having a good time whilst mixing music for the crowd. This portrays fun and feel good feelings within the video, exaggerated through his happy facial expressions. It is conventional to the dance genre as it shows the artist to be highly involved in the party atmosphere of which the music is generally based around. It would also appeal to the target audience of the genre as they may aspire towards the artist party lifestyle that is shown.

Additionally to this, evidence of developing narrative is shown to run alongside the song within the video. The narrative shows the people of different countries coming together for one large beach party. This again adds to the conventions within the video as it means that the video is focusing solely around the party atmosphere that the music aims to create. It would further appeal to the young target audience as they are often seen to enjoy this environment.

After analysing this video and many others, my group and I were able to build upon conventions of our own. One conventional aspect was created through the use of fast paced editing. This was developed in the bar scene with quick successions of jump cuts and close ups used to make a montage. The pace of the video matched the pace of the song; it built upon emotions of excitement. This is very conventional to the dance genre as artists constantly aim to convey these emotions of excitement and happiness within a party atmosphere. This excitement that is portrayed would further appeal to the target audience as it may pursue them to want to enjoy themselves.

Another convention that is evident is seen through the use of colour and lighting. These forms colour and lighting consist of flashing effects that are made to resemble strobe lighting and added colour tints that should develop links towards neon lighting. These colours mostly consisted of blue with flashes of red, green and purple; alongside the use of strobe they were made to connote towards a club setting. This is highly conventional towards the dance genre as dance music is constantly played in this environment. It would further appeal to the target audience as they often attend these venues; meaning they can relate to the references.

Another convention includes the use of a club setting. The is evident as I convey the artist party lifestyle with long shots of a club setting seen through the green strobe lighting. This party lifestyle is seen to be totally conventional to the genre as it is what the music often focuses upon. This is done to appeal to the target audience of young adults who can aspire towards living the party lifestyle of the artist and are also seen to enjoy a club setting. Progress towards my producer attributes is shown through this use of artist representation as I have distorted the conventions of the dance genre in order to have a further lasting effect upon the target audience.

On top of this, the use of strobe lighting was also seen to be highly conventional. I gained inspiration for this from the video 'Club Can't handle me' by Flo Rider and it was evident in two of club scenes within my video; both of which showing red and green strobe lighting.  It was developed through both long shots of numerous club settings and added flashing effects used to highlight the lighting. It is certainly conventional to the dance genre as the lighting is distinct to a club setting; the venue in which dance music is mostly played. Additionally, the connotations towards these venues would appeal to the younger target audience as they are the predominant age groups that attend and enjoy the clubs.

Finally, my group and I were also seen to develop and challenge conventions. This is shown through the use of a narrative that shows the artist to choose a party lifestyle over the life with his girlfriend. A use of narrative is often unconventional to the dance genre as dance music videos are often performance or concept based. However, the narrative itself is used to develop upon the presentation of the artists party lifestyle by showing him to be out with his friends. This developing of the conventional party lifestyle was particularly used in order to appeal to the target audience of young adults and teenagers as they may aspire to live their life like him. We decided upon developing and challenging the conventions in order to a make the video more unique and have a lasting effect upon the audience by making him both relatable with his stereotypical relationship and extraordinary with his extravagant party lifestyle; this complies to Dyer's star theory showing him to be ordinary yet extraordinary, in order to increase his popularity.

Rough cut - Miss Georgiou

A rough cut is one of, if not the most essential aspect for the production of any media product. It's general use is to gain feedback and analysis from an audience in order to show the producer ways which he/she can improve. Essentially this feedback helps the producer to connect to their target audience; helping them meet certain conventions, relate to the audience and helping them find aspects of the product of which the audience may enjoy and that can be built upon. This will help the company backing the product to increase their sales and gain a reputation within their chosen market.

When aimed to gain feedback for my rough cut I used the video sharing network, YouTube. This was the perfect platform to gain feedback from my selected target audience. It has a comment feature allowing people to easily leave comments of which I can assess and build upon. It is easily accessible from any device and location, this means that I can get a wide range of views upon the features of the video. It has a like /dislike feature, showing the popularity of the video. Also, more importantly, it is often used by my target audience of teenagers and young adults as they often access new music videos through the eva growing forms of social media; this would allow me to further connect and relate to the audience, helping my artist build a relationship with viewers.

My production consists of a dance music video based upon the song, 'I Know', by Shift K3Y. Through the use of my rough cut, I hoped to assess the views of my target audience. This would help me develop the positives within my video along with also taking n improvements in order to further connect with the audience. Vitally, it also allows me to connect to current trends within the culture of my selected audience, this would update the artists image in a way that could kelp him to build upon his relationships with his audience. Finally, the feedback would also allow me to assess and build upon the conventional aspect of the video with dance conventions often being assessed by dance fans as they also develop conventions of their own of which I could address.

Comments

Positive feedback:

"The visuals match the rhythm very well"
- This comment is relating to the cutting of the video. Throughout the editing of the video we aimed to match the visuals of the video with the rhythm of the song. This was done in order to develop a conventional pace to the jump cuts within the video in order to make it match the pace of the song. This pace is very conventional to the dance genre; it is seen within almost every dance song with a past beat aimed to build up a sense of excitement and vibrancy. By matching this pace, we aimed to convey similar emotions of excitement and fun. It is evident that this appealed to the target audience through other comments also mentioning this 'party' atmosphere that was evident within the video. We will aim to build upon this sense of excitement through cutting up various lengthy shots with added effects or colouring and also with the needed footage at the end that will complete the video itself; this will be made to be extremely choppy in order to match the fast pace within this section of the song and maintain the excitement that is evidently enjoyed by the audience and that is currently seen throughout the majority of the video.

"Variety of shots in London and club fit with the genre well"
- This comment is seen to relate to the often referral to a urban setting and the portrayal of an urban nightlife. It is shown through frequent successions of jump cuts and transitions, switching from the long shots of iconic London buildings to shots of the artist within a club or bar setting. The comment itself is relating solely to the evident dance conventions within the video. The use of club setting epitomises these conventions. The dance genre is often seen to revolve around these club settings with the music constantly being played within the venues. By referring to the artist constantly within this setting, we present him as being a very conventional dance artist. This again evidently appeals to the target audience as they enjoy a club setting, being the majority of age groups that are seen to enjoy clubs and bars. Ways in which we will address this is through added club settings, this will be evident within the montage of club settings and will add to the variety of clubs seen in the video itself. I t again builds upon the conventional party lifestyle of the artist which the younger audience would aspire towards.

"Very energetic and made me and Jess want to party!"
- This final comment was certainly made in relation to the referral of iconic features within a nightlife and a club setting. This consists of strobe lighting, close ups of drinks and the use of long shots emphasising the masses of people enjoying themselves. It all helps towards building a vibrant party atmosphere that is conveyed through the visuals. This, again, is highly conventional within the dance genre with artists often aiming to convey this party atmosphere in order to develop feel good, positive emotions alongside the music. The dance fans evidently enjoy this as they refer to their need to 'party!'. This epitomises the aim for our video and shows our success in conveying a fun and contagious party atmosphere. We will build upon this party atmosphere through added pace within the additional footage and additional references to vibrant party settings and connotations.

Constructive feedback:

"could use a bit more colour in certain aspects of the video."
- In my option this is relating to the office settings that mostly occur at the beginning of the video but also continue throughout. These have little effects added to them and could appear to be unconventional to the genre. Also this unconventional presentation of the office setting was used to present the professionalism of the artist and develop upon the narrative as its hows him thinking about his girlfriend and his lifestyle; its could be seen as boring and controversial to the exciting and vibrant emotions that the dance fans expect within a dance video. In order to address this, the group and I will edit the office settings in order to build upon the pace and the conventionality of the scene. This will probably include added tints, jump cuts and flashing effects. It should add to the dance conventions of which the audience evidently enjoy, as seen through the positive comments stated above.

"could improve by making the narrative more clear"
- This is relating to the missing section of footage towards the end of the video. This missing section means that the narrative of the video does not make total sense as the decision that the artist is evidently making between his friends, his party lifestyle and his girlfriend with a more settled, yet dull, lifestyle does not come to conclusion. This would have easily confused the viewer. However, this will be easily ratified by the addition of new footage at the end of the video. This added footage will clarify the artists decision to leave his girlfriend and enjoy the party lifestyle with his friends. This clarity of the decision will be shown through footage of the artist and his girlfriend as the artist constantly looks away to flashes of a club setting and party environment; it will be ended with the artist and his girlfriend walking in separate paths to signify his decision. This portrayal of the artists decision would comply to the conventions of the dance genre as it shows the artist to be closely related to the party lifestyle that the music revolves around. It would also appeal to the target audience as they may aspire to be as closely related to such a fun and exciting lifestyle.

"the only thing i'd say is the made up club scene needs to be edited more"
- This comment is made in referral to the fabricated bar setting in which the artist is evidently shown to be enjoying himself with his close friends. The scene itself was fabricated in a studio with one neon light and evident curtains in the background. It could mean that the setting itself looks to be less professional and less aesthetically pleasing; this was made evident within the comments. The negative comments made about the bar setting forced me and my partner into large amounts of editing, focused upon the bar setting. This included added strobe lighting, effects used to darken and black out the background plus added contrast used to make the images more luminous and crisp; this helped to highlight the neon lighting. Overall this vastly helped make the scene look more realistic. It certainly helps make the video look more professional and asthically pleasing; plus, the highlighting of colour and added lighting also helps appeal to dance conventions as they add to the vibrancy within the party atmosphere in the video. It would appeal to the audience as they can aspire towards the artists presentation by wanting to be as closely connected with such a high quality nightlife.

Digipak - Miss Miller

Digipaks are often used to present an artist’s album or single in more depth with a personal touch from the artist consisting of a message or signature. This allows fans to get a bigger insight into the reasoning behind the music and enables them to further connect with the artist. Typically the digipaks consists of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or cardboard outer binding, with one or more plastic trays for the CD. For my individual digipak I used Photoshop CS6, this allowed me to crop and develop my digipak with a professional look consistent styling throughout. It also allowed me to keep up with themes of my other ancillary in order to link the media products. My first slide was created in relation to my cover, this consisted of a close up of the artist with added conventional effects. The second slide consisted of my message to the fans, this was written on top of the artists torso with a shirt and tie; it aimed to add to the relationship build between the artist and the fans whilst also maintaining the professional presentation seen throughout my music video. The third slide was the CD cover, it included an urban city skyline with added conventional effects; meeting the urban connotations within dance music and the album title itself. My fourth and sixth slides consists of two pitches of the artist showing each slide of the artists face, it creates a close up of the artist between them; one shows black and white colours, showing the artists dedication and professionalism; the other shows luminous colours, this exaggerates dance conventions and shows the artists party lifestyle. Finally, my sixth slide and back cover consists of the list of songs within the album, this shows a picture of the gherkin alongside the list with added conventional effects; it complies with the urban themes of the genre and the video itself.

Slide 1 - Front Cover

The main colours within this slide comes from the added strobe lighting effect placed in the top left corner. This included white and light green colours that are amplified through the change in colour balance; bringing out the white colours, and a posterise effects that adds to the luminosity of the colours within the lighting. These bright colours and use of strobe lighting creates vibrant connotations that relate to that opt a club or bar, helping to connote the themes of nightlife within the album. These references to vibrant, fun behaviour and connotations towards an exciting night life make the slide itself highly conventional towards the dance genre; the music often revolves around life settings and city nightlife, with the music often being played in clubs. This conventional use colours would also appeal to the younger target audience of 15 to 25 year olds as they are often seen to enjoy this vibrant nightlife atmosphere and club settings.
The main image within the slide simply consists of the silhouette of the London skyline. This is used to portray urban connotations and links towards the urban nightlife. The silhouette itself is brought to attention through the use of inverted colour effects allowing it to stand out against the strobe lighting and also allowing the black background to resemble the night sky. The emphasis on an urban nightlife is developed through the positioning of the strobe lighting seen to shine upon the city and develop the idea that the city becomes vibrant at night. The use of urban connotations both conveys conventions of the dance genre whilst also developing a consistency within the general artist presentation over my different media products referring to the album. The conventional aspect of the slide is developed due to the fact that the dance genre often revolves around the urban nightlife with fans of the music generally living in urban areas; also, consistency is evident through references to urban settings seen the music video and remaining slides of the digipak. Additionally to this, the slides referral to urban settings and nightlife would evidently appeal to the target audience who often live in urban areas and enjoy the vibrant nightlife.
The use of layout is evident within the slide through the positioning of the title 'urban lights'. The title itself is positioned hovering over the city skyline whilst also being underneath the strobe lighting. This is done to indicate the fact that the artists music has themes linking towards the urban nightlife and club setting; it shows the album to optimise the vibrant atmosphere in a city's nightlife. This evidently makes the slide furthermore conventional with the genre often focusing upon a club setting and urban environment. It also adds to the consistency within my media products as the artist is constantly showed to be in contact with the urban city life and the party lifestyle in clubs and bars. It further relates to target audience through showing the artist and his music to be closely connected to the urban party lifestyle that they are seen to enjoy.
The typography and language within the slide consists of the album title, 'urban lights'. This is portrayed through the use of a bold font with the word 'urban' shown in white and 'lights' shown in a light green and blue neon font that resembles similar effects to the strobe lighting  in the slide. The white bold font with the word urban is used to relate to the skyline silhouette and the neon font for the word 'lights' links it towards the strobe lighting; this provides a visual aid representing the meaning of the title. The connotations of a vibrant club atmosphere seen through the use of strobe lighting also helps link the music within the title towards dance conventions; this is achieved through the replicated effects on the word 'lights' and the the strive lighting itself. This presentation of conventional dance music with urban themes would greatly appeal to the target audience who generally live in these areas and enjoy the atmosphere within a conventional club setting.

Slide 2 - Personal Message

The colours within this slide consist of blue luminous colours contrasted with the formal and professional image of a shirt and tie. The purpose of these colours are to develop connotations linking towards the dance genre. Bright colours are highly conventional within this genre as they connote the fun party lifestyle that is focused upon alongside the bright neon colours seen in a club setting in which the music is played. The conventional aspects of the colours also helps appeal to the target audience of 15 to 25 year olds. The majority of this audience is seen to enjoy a party lifestyle, and aspire toward this life; by using bright colours we are able to comply with the audiences preferences in terms of their vibrant lifestyle.
The image used within this slide includes a picture of the artists torso as he wears a shirt and the; there is also an added posterised effect used to bring out the vibrant blue colours added to the image. The main purpose of this image is to develop and emphasise a professional image of the artist. The image itself has connotations of a work, office environment. This is used to elaborate upon the artists dedication towards his music and his professionalism within the industry. Furthermore, the image is also used to link towards the video itself, plus connotations towards an urban lifestyle that is related to in the album title 'Urban Lights'. This builds consistency within the artists presentation, building up his reputation of him being a serious and dedicated artist whilst also contrasting it to his fun party lifestyle. The professional presentation and emphasis on the artists success may appeal to the majority of the target audience that are beginning work. They may aspire towards the artists success and dedication.
The main aspect of the layout is the fact that the message from the artist is seen to cover the artists torso. It has the effect of showing the audience that the artists message is genuine and that it, generically, comes from the heart. This may have no influence on the conventional aspects of the slide; however, it may help the artist to build a relationship with his fans. The audience may feel like they can relate to artists message and appreciate his hard work that is emphasised in the message. This can help them build a relationship with the artist, allowing them to further relate to his lyrics and the music video itself.
The main aspect of the typography seen within the slide consists of the font used for the message itself. This is seen to be a handwritten font. It is used to emphasise the fact that the artist has written the message himself and directed it to the fans personally. This vastly helps the artist build a relationship with the fans as they may read the message in more detail and relate it to the lyrics of his music and the music video itself. Additionally to this, a key aspect of the language within the massage may include the use of a 'x' at the end of the message, used to resemble a kiss. This can be seen to appeal to the female audience as they fantasise about the artist and the way he treats women within the video. It also adds to the personal aspect of the video as the audience may feel that the message has been aimed towards them personally.

Slide 3 - CD cover

The colours within this slide consists of a variety of bright blue colours seen added to both the skyline and the water in the themes, plus a contrasted luminous white colour added to the builds. The purpose of these colours are to again build upon connotations of the dance genre. Bright colours are highly conventional within this genre as they develop connotations of the fun party lifestyle that is focused upon throughout the music alongside the bright neon colours seen in a club or bar setting in which the music is played. The conventional aspects of the colours also helps appeal to the younger target audience. The majority of this audience is seen to enjoy this party lifestyle that is conveyed through the bright colours in the side. The colours are used to relate to this atmosphere that the audience aspire towards
The image within the slide consists of a shot showing the London skyline just before nightfall; it includes icons features such as the themes, the London eye and Big Ben. There are also added effects used to show the city to be luminous and falloff bright colours. The use of the image itself is done to relate to the actual title of the album, it literally shows the 'urban lights' as it connotes the nightlife within the city. This is done through the timing of the shot, the portrayal of the London skyline and the added effects plus change in colour balances used to show the lights that connote a party lifestyle and the neon lighting within a club. This is very conventional towards the dance genre as the music focuses around this urban nightlife that is seen within the image. The urban themes and relation to the title also shows consistency within the artists presentation as we show him to be closely connected with this urban party lifestyle. Furthermore this helps appeal to the target audience as they often participate in this urban nightlife and aspire to be as renowned within the nightlife as the artist himself.
The use of layout is evident through the positioning of the album title within the CD cover. It is seen to be positioned across the city skyline. This creates a visual meaning to the title as it is shown to be literally hovering above the 'urban lights' of London. It also helps to elaborate upon the fact that the artists music is made in relation to the urban nightlife, vastly helping to promote the dance conventions within the slide. This use of layout is highly conventional towards the genre as it shows the music to be related to an urban nightlife; this is what dance music often focuses around. The connotations centred around an urban nightlife would again appeal to the target audience as the younger adults often enjoy the cities clubs and bars at the weekend.
The use of language evidently links towards the conventional presentation of the urban nightlife through the album title 'urban lights'. The use of the word 'lights' has connotations towards the lights within a club and the bright neon lighting that is original to that environment. This makes it highly conventional to the dance genre that is mostly played in these environments. It also appeals to the younger adults who often attend these clubs and bars. The typography seen used in the presentation of the title consisted of a bold white font that stands out against the blue skyline. This elaborates upon the fact that the artist and his music epitomises the urban nightlife, meeting similar dance conventions stated above and against appealing to the younger target audience who aspire towards regularly enjoying this nightlife.

Slide 4/5 - image of artist

Both slides four and five are used simultaneously to create a close up of the artist between them in order to show his differing attributes and personalities. The colours within slide four consist of vibrant blue colours that are developed through a change in colour balance, this is seen alongside a black and white image of the other side of the artists faced seen in slide five that is created through black and white effects; both have an added posterise effect to maintain a consistent presentation throughout the digipak. The vibrant colours added to slide four are used in order show the artists party lifestyle. The colours connote the artist vibrant personality, they also associate themselves towards neon and strobe lighting seen within a club. It emphasises the artists conventional presentation by showing him to be closely involved in the party atmosphere that the dance music centres around. This is contrasted with the colours seen in slide five; the black and white colours aim to show the professional aspect of the artists personality, helping to support slide two as he elaborates upon his dedication when creating his music. Overall the differing colours of the two images convey his diverse personality by emphasising his party lifestyle and his professional attitude to his work; this is a constant presentation of the artist as this contrast is also focused upon throughout the music video. Finally, this differing aspect of the artists lifestyle would also appeal to younger adults entering the workplace as they may aspire towards being able to successfully balance ether professional work life whilst aiming to maintain a vibrant lifestyle.
The image created between both slide four and slide five consists of a close up of the artist with a blank facial expression, looking directly at the camera. This is used to show the artist to be the focal point of the digipak, this may again appeal to fans of the artist as they fantasise about the artist himself. With the artist also looking directly at the camera fans may feel as though he is looking directly towards them; this adds to the relationship built between the artist and the audience. Additionally the blank and simple facial expressions allows the colours to clearly emphasise his versatile personality; this evidently appeals to the conventions of the dance genre and the target audience.
The layout within the two slides consists of the fact that the the two slides are positioned so that the image comes together in order to create a symmetrical close up of the artist. This was the main way in which the contrast in personalities was developed. It made the artist the centre point of the digipak and maintained the theme of the artists diverse personality, aimed towards appealing to the target audience who aspire towards gaining this balance between professionalism and a vibrant social life.

Slide 6 - Back cover, song list

The main colours within this slide that are seen in the background of the slide and the image of the gherkin consists of a variety of bright blue shades. This highlighted blue colour is portrayed again through a change in the colour balance, the variety of shades are created through an added posterise effect. The bright colours are used to convey fun and vibrant connotations whilst also showing apart atmosphere that is seen in clubs or bars. This vibrancy that is portrayed is highly conventional to the dance genre;the music often aims to develop feel good vibrant emotions that are developed through the use of the vibrant blue colours. The colouring itself is also beneficial to the development in a consistency with artist presentation; the colour blue is related to throughout my ancillaries and also seen through consistent blue tints added to the music video itself. It shows the artist as having a fun and vibrant side to his personality and music. The carless younger target audience are often seen to aim towards enjoying their lifestyle and having fun, this feel good connotations would greatly appeal to them.

This main image within this slide consists of an image of the gherkin. This is shown through low angle to show its extravagant stature; posterise effects were also added in order to create a variety of blue shades. The use of the gherkin is slightly conventional to the dance genre due to its urban connotations; dance music is often aimed at the urban area and the clubs and bars in which the music centres around usually only appear in these areas. The use of the Gherkin furthermore adds to the consistency throughout my media products; the Gherkin is used as a setting in the music video. This allows the audience to develop links between products. The extravagance of the building also helps portray the artist success and professionalism as the Gherkin is a renowned building for business success. This artist presentation would appeal to the target audience of aspiring young adults who want to gain success quickly when entering work.
The main feature within the layout of the slide consists of the order in which the songs are listed. The songs are listed with the more well known songs towards the top and less known songs towards the bottom. This is done in order to appeal to the consumeristic fans of the dance genre. The dance genre has a very mainstream audience influenced mostly by social media. By showing more well known songs that are often played on the radio or music channels, I can ignite an interest from the mainstream audience; making them want to listen to other songs in the album.
The typography within the slide mainly consists of the font and its colour. The font is bold and distorted in a way that has electrical connotations; also, the font is a black colour. This black colour allows the songs to stand out; attracting the consumeristic interest from the target audience by highlighting well known songs. Also, the electronic connotations that are created from the blocked font are conventional to the dance genre with the music often being created electronically.

Strengths/Weaknesses
I felt that during the use of Photoshop for my ancillary texts I gathered a variety of strengths and weaknesses. My strengths included my consistency with the artists presentation in my ancillaries. The consistency was evident throughout the different media products through numerous ways; the colour blue was made to be reoccurring through a change in colour balance on my ancillaries and a blue tint often added to the video, the referral to the urban lifestyle is seen with panning shots of London in the video and is also referred to in the ancillaries through images of the city skyline and iconic buildings, also, there is a general reference to professionalism in relation to the artists personality; this is seen through the artist costume in all of the media products as he often wears suits or shirts. The consistency that is evident helps viewers to create links between products that they can associate with the artist and his music; this is a very effective way of building upon his reputation.
One key weakness of mine was seen through the use of Photoshop and specifically the cropping tool. This was particularly evident in slides 3/4. Here I struggled with the use of the cropping and cutting tool when attempting to make the two slides symmetric in order create a contrasting close up made of two sides of the artists face. It took me a while to create this symmetric image, consuming a lot of my time and prolonging the process. Although I solved the issue in the end, it meant that I missed the deadline. This vastly damaged the efficiency of the process.

In conclusion, I feel that the key aspect of the digipak is its conventionality towards the dance genre. This is generally developed through the use of different shades of bright colours such as blue or green. I created these colours through a posterise effect, it adds to the vibrancy of the colours developing feel good positive connotations that builds upon a party atmosphere; of which is highly conventional to dance music due to it often aimed to create these emotions. The use of urban connotations alongside the connotations towards vibrancy and excitement would be seen as very appeal to the target audience. The younger target audience of 15- 25 often live a carefree relaxed lifestyle, aiming to enjoy themselves; the brighter colours may appeal to their light hearted nature. Also, urban connotations would appeal to the more niche audience of the dance genre who are often seen to come from urban areas, enjoying the vibrant nightlife. They would be able to relate to these urban references. Finally, the artist is certainly able to build a relationship with the fans through his portrayal of his personality. Within the didpak the artist is shown to have a contrasting personality; showing his vibrant party lifestyle next to his dedicated and professional lifestyle. This is evident in both slides 3/4. It would appeal to the audience as they are at an age of which they may be starting work life and entering adulthood; they would aspire to live the artists party lifestyle whilst also hoping to achieve his success and professionalism.
